What IndexNow is
IndexNow is an open protocol that lets a website tell search engines the moment a page is added, updated or deleted. One notification is shared with every participating search engine, including Microsoft Bing, Yandex, Seznam.cz and Naver.
Without it, a search engine finds changes only when it next crawls your site, which can take days or weeks for less visited pages.
Why it matters for AI search too
Microsoft Copilot answers with Bing's index, and ChatGPT search draws on Bing as one of its sources. Getting pages into Bing quickly helps them reach those AI answers sooner.
What IndexPedia does
- Watches your sitemap for new and changed pages
- Sends them to IndexNow with your site's key, in batches
- Records what was sent and the response for every page
- Skips pages that redirect, fail or are marked noindex
Does Google use IndexNow?
Google does not take part in IndexNow. For Google, IndexPedia uses your sitemap and Search Console data to show which pages are indexed and why others are not.
Key terms
- IndexNow key
- A text file on your site that proves the notifications come from you.
- Crawl budget
- How much attention a search engine gives to crawling your site. Notifying changes saves it for pages that matter.
