Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Business? How to Check for Free

Find out if AI assistants name your business when customers ask, who they recommend instead, which sources they trust, and what to do about it.

More customers now skip the search box and ask an AI assistant instead: "best bakery in Raleigh" or "who makes custom cakes near me". The assistant answers with a short list of names, and if you are not on it, that customer never hears of you. This guide shows how to check whether AI recommends your business, what the results mean, and what you can do to get named more often.

Sweet RiseFlour ChildGolden Crust (you)Oak City Bakes"Best bakerynear me?"AI named 3 competitors, not you
A customer's question goes to an AI with live web search, the way ChatGPT search answers it. You see who it recommends: here three competitors are named and your business is not.

Why AI recommendations matter for small businesses

A Google results page has ten links, ads, a map and a page two. An AI answer has none of that. It has a few names, maybe a sentence about each, and that is it.

That changes the game in two ways:

  • There is no page two. Being named is what counts. Being named first counts even more.
  • The customer trusts the shortlist. When an assistant says "Golden Crust Bakery is known for its sourdough", many people go straight there without comparing.

So the old question, "Do I rank on Google?", now has a twin: "Does AI recommend me?" They are related, but they are not the same. A business can rank well on Google and still be missing from AI answers, and the other way around.

Discovery questions vs name questions

There are two very different ways a customer meets you through AI.

Discovery questions

A discovery question does not include your name. For example: "best gluten-free bakery in Raleigh" or "where can I order a wedding cake in Raleigh, NC". This is how new customers find businesses. If AI does not name you here, you are missing people who have never heard of you.

Name questions

A name question asks about you directly: "What is Golden Crust Bakery known for?" or "Is Golden Crust Bakery open on Sundays?" This shows whether AI knows who you are, and whether what it says is right. Wrong hours or a missing service here can cost you a sale even when the customer already wanted you.

Most business owners only test name questions, because they type their own name into ChatGPT. That feels reassuring when the answer is good. But discovery questions are where the new business is.

What the IndexPedia AI Visibility Check does

The AI Visibility Check is a free test. You enter your business name, your city and what you do. IndexPedia then asks the questions your customers ask, live, with web search turned on, the same way an assistant answers a real customer. It reads every answer and records:

  • Whether your business was named in discovery questions, and in what position
  • Whether AI knows you when asked by name
  • Which competitors were named instead, ranked by how often
  • The websites the answers relied on
  • Facts AI states about you, and gaps in what it knows

The check uses a leading AI model with live web search, the setup behind assistants like ChatGPT search. You get the answers themselves in the report, so you can read exactly what was said. Nothing is a guess.

You do not need a website to run the check. If you add one, IndexPedia also looks at whether AI used it as a source.

How to run the check

  1. 1
    Enter your business

Type your business name, city and what you do, for example Golden Crust Bakery, Raleigh, NC, bakery.

  2. 2
    We ask like a customer

IndexPedia asks discovery and name questions live, with web search turned on.

  3. 3
    See where you stand

Read your score, your position, the competitors named instead and the sources AI used.

  4. 4
    Act on the sources

Get listed on the sites AI relied on, then give AI one clear page about you.

The check runs in the background while a progress screen shows each step. It takes about a minute. You can run 3 checks an hour without an account, and a free account keeps your results.

How to read your results

The AI visibility score

The score sums up how often AI recommended you when customers asked for a business like yours, and how well it knew you when asked by name. Being recommended counts for most of the score, because that is what brings new customers. A score of zero means AI did not name you in any discovery answer. That is common for small businesses, and it is a starting point, not a verdict.

These two can be very different. Golden Crust Bakery might be well known by name, with AI describing its sourdough and Saturday hours correctly, but still not be named when someone asks for "best bakery in Raleigh". That tells you the problem is not that AI has never heard of you. It is that AI does not see enough signals to put you on the shortlist.

Example: how often each bakery was named in discovery answers in a sample check
Oak Street Bakehouse
80%
Capital Cakes
60%
Sweet Rise Cafe
40%
Golden Crust Bakery
20%

Competitors AI names instead

This list is often the most useful part. It shows who AI picks when it does not pick you, ranked by how often. Look at what those businesses have that you do not. Usually it is not a better product. It is clearer, more consistent facts in more places.

Sources AI trusts

The report lists the websites AI relied on for its answers. For a local bakery, that might be your city's food guide, a review site, a wedding vendor directory and a few business listings. Those sources are your to-do list.

Why AI recommends your competitors instead of you

AI assistants build answers from what they can find and trust online: business websites, listing sites, review sites and local directories. The businesses that get named usually have clear, consistent facts across those places.

Here are the usual reasons a business is left out:

  • You are not on the sources AI reads. If the local food guide lists five bakeries and you are not one of them, AI is unlikely to name you.
  • Your facts do not match. Different hours on two sites, or an old address, make AI less sure about you.
  • Your services are hidden. A menu that only exists as a photo or a PDF is hard for AI to read.
  • Your site blocks AI crawlers. If your robots.txt or firewall blocks crawlers like OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, AI search cannot quote your own pages. A site scan tests this for you, and Can AI crawlers read your website? explains each bot.
ReasonWhat AI seesWhat to do
Not listed on trusted sourcesNo mention on the sites it readsGet listed with the same facts
Inconsistent factsTwo sets of hours, two phone numbersMake name, address and hours match everywhere
Menu only in imagesNo readable list of servicesPut services and prices in plain text
Crawlers blockedCannot read your websiteFix robots.txt and firewall rules

No one can guarantee that AI will recommend you, and anyone who promises it is guessing. But the steps that help are well known.

  1. Start with the sources the check shows. Make sure your business is listed on each one, with the same name, address, hours and services.
  2. Make your website clear. State plainly what you do and where, in text, not only in images. Say "custom cakes in Raleigh, NC" in words a customer would use.
  3. Let AI search crawlers in. Check that your robots.txt and firewall do not block the bots behind AI search.
  4. Give AI one clear page about you. That is what the AI Profile does: your facts, services, prices and answers to common questions, published as a page AI can read, with LocalBusiness and FAQ schema. You can read more in AI Profile: get your business into AI answers.
Before

Golden Crust Bakery is known by name but never appears when someone asks for the best bakery in Raleigh. Hours differ on two listing sites and the menu is a photo.

After

The bakery is listed on the sources AI relied on, with matching hours. The menu is in plain text, and an AI Profile states its services and prices clearly. It now has the facts AI needs to name it.

Copy the exact wording of a customer question from your results, like "best sourdough in Raleigh", and make sure that phrase is answered in plain words on your own site.

Why your results change from check to check

AI answers vary from one ask to the next, even for the same question. You might be named on Monday and missed on Tuesday. That is normal, and it is why one check is a snapshot, not a final answer.

To see the real direction, you need the same questions asked over time. AI Monitoring does that: it asks the same customer questions every week, live and with web search, and tracks whether you are named, how well AI knows you, and which competitors it names. It costs $19 a month. You can read how that works in Track AI mentions week by week.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT recommend local businesses?

Yes. When someone asks ChatGPT with search for a business like a bakery or a plumber in their city, it often answers with a short list of named businesses. Which ones it names depends on what it finds and trusts online, such as business websites, listings and review sites.

How can I check if AI recommends my business?

Run the free IndexPedia AI Visibility Check. Enter your business name, city and what you do, and it asks real customer questions live with web search. You see whether you were named, in what position, and who was named instead.

Why does AI recommend my competitors instead of me?

AI assistants build answers from sources they can find and trust. Competitors that get named usually have clear, consistent facts on business websites, listing sites and local directories. The check shows which sources were used, so you can see where you are missing.

Can I pay to get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

No one can promise that AI will recommend you. What works is giving AI clear facts to find: your own pages, a structured profile, and listings on the sites it trusts. The AI Profile helps with this, but it does not guarantee a mention.

Why did I get a different result when I checked again?

AI answers vary from one ask to the next, even for the same question. One check shows where you stand at that moment. AI Monitoring asks the same questions every week so you can see the real trend.

Do I need a website for the AI Visibility Check?

No. The check works with just your business name, city and what you do. If you add your website, IndexPedia also looks at whether AI used it as a source.
